U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott speaks with youth volunteers at the Service for Peace April 26 work party

Dr. José Rizal Park

Sat., April 26, 175 youth group volunteers, plus EarthCorps and AmeriCorps leads and neighbors, cleared ivy, blackberries, and hemlock, prepping for the fall planting. About 40,000 sq ft have now been cleared of invasives.

Participating groups included WSU King County Extension; students from Seattle Central Community College, University of Washington, and Seattle University; City Year and City Heroes Americorps youth volunteers; YMCA; and the Disney Company. The event was organized by Service for Peace and EarthCorps. Washington Governor Chris Gregoire published a proclamation honoring the event, which was also attended by U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott and several of his staff members.

April 21, 40 Safeco employees and 7 EarthCorps crew members cleared over 9,000 sq ft of ivy and blackberries from the eastern slope.

April 14, Lakeside School teachers had a faculty development day at the park. They picked up broadleaf maple saplings thinned over the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, trimming them for a future project - maybe a fence, maybe an art installation.

March 15, 130 participants came to the Clean and Green event sponsored by the Department of Neighborhoods and Seattle Public Utilities. This was one of the largest neighborhood service days in the history of the South End.

Beacon Bluff

Work on the paths in the Community Garden area is happening this spring, as well as p-patchers prepping their beds.

In 2007, a  Small Sparks grant improved 15th Ave. with raised beds, erosion control, and Buddha.

Beacon Bluff was highlighted by Mayor Nickels and the Department of Neighborhoods at the 2007 Dept. of Neighborhoods public awards ceremony.

Atlantic St. Public Stairway

The Atlantic St. public stairway off 15th Ave. S is our community's latest  project. A neighbor organized its first cleanup in January - now the fourth Sunday every month.

College St. Public Stairway

The Dept. of Transportation is restoring the College St. public stairway. The project begins April 14, and will last for two weeks.

Community Court Service Workers

April 12, 5 Service Workers and 2 crew leaders cleared 450 feet of blackberries on the south side of the Bayview Stairway, and ivy and clematis from 19 mature trees.

The team cleaned up trash on both upper and lower stairs, and at the bus stop at College and 14th Ave.

The next service day is Saturday, May 10.
