Community Court service day, June 14: 2 cubic yards
of invasives removed, blackberry roots dug out,
trail work at Beacon Bluff

Beacon Bluff

June 14, 4 Community Service workers and 2 crew leads cleared 450 sq ft of sticky bob and morning glories from native roses, sword ferns, and rhododendrons.

They dug out eight blackberry rootballs to a depth of 2+ feet, and put them in the bag shown above. About 2 cubic yards of mulch was placed in the community garden, about a third of the way onto the upper two trails and some on the next lower down. A couple of cubic yards of invasives got dug and pulled out.

Seven neighbors from 15th Avenue moved the mulch pile from the bottom of the p-patch to the top for distribution.

Parks & Recreation is getting an estimate on brush clearing within the off-leash area, and is going to bring a slope mower in, too.

Lucille St. Public Stairways - Gateway to Georgetown

The Lucille public stairway that leads to Georgetown has been cleaned up by Seattle Public Utilities.

It's part of the route taken by Beacon Hill firefighters for conditioning runs. On seeing its state - a lot of trash, drug paraphernalia, empty booze containers, graffiti - first responders responded first, making a way welcome.

Community Court Service Workers

We've been offered a second Community Court Service Worker day, with neighborhood support.

The Service Workers are first-time offenders of inconsequential, low-level infractions for which our judicial system has imposed good service to compensate for these misdemeanors.

Only one other Seattle neighborhood makes use of Community Court Service Workers - Belltown. In Belltown, they only pick up trash.

On Beacon Hill, these workers are treated with respect - and make a difference on public stairways, in parks, in greenbelts, around our schools and homes.

Where there is a shortage of neighbors, the Community Court provides strong, caring, consistent commitment.

Beacon Hill has benefitted one Saturday a month from this effort since 2007.

If you would like a team of dedicated workers to help out around your block, get in touch.
