1971:
Lower meadow slope area transferred by City of Seattle to Dept. of Parks and Recreation.

1978:
Park and nearby bridge rededicated to the Filipino national hero, Dr. José Rizal, due to the efforts of Friends of Dr. José Rizal.

1993:
Seattle Rotary Club, Friends of Dr. José Rizal, the Weyerhaeuser Company, and the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust begin reforestation project.

1998:
Beacon Alliance of Neighbors formed to promote a safe  community for Northwest Beacon Hill.

2000:
Kingdome blows up. Thousands of people descend on the lower park to witness the event, establishing paths.

2001:
Citizens for Off Leash Areas creates a fenced dog park in the lower meadow.

2003:
City of Seattle's Neighborhood Action Team engages citizens and city, county, and state agencies to make the Jungle safe. Feral cat rescue program begins.

2004:
BAN receives broad support for a multi-use trail and habitat project in the forest on the south slope.

2005:
March 27: Friends of Dr. José Rizal hosts cleanup of upper park along Judkins.

April 19: Open House on Future of  Dr. José Rizal  Park, the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trail, and the Jungle; 36 community and agency stakeholders endorse multi-use approach to developing access to forested areas of Dr. José Rizal Park.

April - Sept.: Americorps, Starbucks, KPMG Accounting, Seattle University students, and other volunteers begin habitat restoration. Seattle Neighborhood Group CPTED Addendum endorses access trail project.

Sept. 2005 - May 2006: Jungle Work Group formed.

Oct. 2005: BAN hosts public safety meeting attended by 36 community members and SPD and DON reps, followed by meetings with SDOT and Seattle Neighborhood Group; initial planning for 2006 public safety strategy for North Beacon Hill.

2006:
Jan: 190 EarthCorps volunteers, staff members, and neighbors clear southeast section of slopes in Dr. José Rizal Park; 500 survival rings created for trees.

Feb. - March 2006: Explore encampments north of Holgate stairway and in Lewis Park; breaks up encamped drug distribution in Lewis Park.

April 2006: With Seattle Neighborhood Group, conducts Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) surveys for public stairways on Holgate, Atlantic, College, and Bayview; networks with Beacon Ridge Improvement Community (BRIC) on Hill, Walker, Holgate stairs and street cleanups.

April 2006: Presentation to Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust Board of Directors Meeting on "Jungle" initiative.

April - May 2006: Conducts three sweeps of greenbelt south to Columbia Way, mapping encampments and removing as warranted.

May 2006: SDOT cleanup work on Judkins, Atlantic, and College on west side; on east side, SDOT begins restoration of several public stairwells.

May 2006: Arranges through DPD to seal crime scene house on Beacon Ave. / Holgate.

April - May 2006: Sponsors several visits to greenbelt by neighbors and leaders of City agencies, environmental and bicycle organizations, City Council Members Sally Clark and David Della, and assistants to King County Council Member Dow Constantine.

June 2006: Proposed plan of action to Wash. DOT for cleaning up Dearborn / I-90 corridor. Presentation to Uptown Alliance (lower Queen Anne com. council) on Jungle project success as model for Kineer Park.

July 2006: Five neighborhood volunteers clean out trash/ recyclables at scenic overlook, Dr. José Rizal Park.

Sept., 2006: King County United Way Day of Caring - Volunteers from Washington Mutual Saving help remove knotweed and ivy from woods;  Seattle Pacific University selects project as part of its City Quest program for incoming freshman students.

Oct., 2006: SPD / community meeting to strategize anticrime efforts.

2007:
Jan. 12, 2007: Green Seattle Partnership site evaluation. 1 volunteer hour

Jan. 17 MLK /United Way Day of Caring: 19 volunteers from UW Cardinal Newman Association and the UW Filipino Student Association and 4 neighbors worked for 110 hours, in an area the length of a city block.

Jan. 27, 39 EarthCorps volunteer, coordinators, and neighbors cleared 15,200 square feet of ivy off the southern slope in preparation for October's plantings of native species, putting in 37 survival rings, and working 141 hours.

Feb. 17: Forest damage survey, Dr. José Rizal Park south to Holgate Bridge. Up to 100 trees fell during Dec. 2005 and Jan. 2006 wind storms, blocking upper roads and trails off South Judkins Street, including six threatening southern fence of off-leash area. 2 volunteers, 4 hours.

Feb. 28: SDOT Open House on Phase 1 and 2 of completion of Mountains to Sound Greenway Trail.

March 24: 29 EarthCorps volunteers and staff cleared 7,000 sq ft of ivy from the slope of Dr. José Rizal Park, in preparation for planting native species. Along with ivy, about half a small pickup load of trash was removed, including a tire and rim, rotting blankets, a length of pipe and a lot of recyclables. Three neighbors also re-opened an access trail at Judkins, trimming a fallen tree. 111 volunteer hours.

March 28: EarthCorps crew of six and one neighbor begin restoration on Parks & Recreation and SDOT property in the woods between Judkins and Atlantic, putting survival rings around significant broad leaf maples; also cleared a blackberry patch in Dr. José Rizal Park. 36 hours.

May: Weekly work parties at Lewis Park begin restoration.

June 30: 39 EarthCorps volunteers, neighbors, and staff members weeded ivy from 3468 sq ft, mulched 218 sg ft, turned four ivy piles and removed lots of trash and recyclables. 160 hours.

July 10, 11: 26 EarthCorps crew members and a neighbor worked in two teams of 13 each over two days, making slope improvements for erosion control and to prepare for planting native species in the fall. 216 hours

July 28: 9 Seattle Works volunteers remove ivy from 56 broadleaf maples in the off-leash area (800 sq ft ivy cleared from ground level), and cut and clear hemlock at the overlook. 36 hours.

Aug. 25: 9 Seattle Works volunteers helped 3 neighbors prune back laurels and clean northern area of Lewis Park. 48 hours.

Sept. 16: OLA / Dr. José Rizal Park - 50 OLA volunteers, neighbors, O'Day High School students, and Community Court service workers clear entrance to the Off-Leash Area and begin removing blackberry bramble overlooking downtown Seattle, I-90, and the Dearborn cut. 200 hours.

Sept. 21: United Way Day of Caring - 50 Microsoft volunteers and 4 neighbors clear blackberry bramble from Dr. José Rizal Park and clear ivy and woody debris in Lewis Park. 216 hours.

Sept. 22: City Quest, Seattle Pacific University - 30 volunteers and 4 neighbors continue clearing work in OLA and plant native species in Lewis Park. 136 hours.

Sept. 29: Serve Seattle, Seattle University - 40 volunteers and 6 neighbors clear blackberry bramble from Dr. José Rizal Park and clear ivy and woody debris in Lewis Park, and remove blackberries from Beacon Bluff. 184 hours.

Oct. 13: OLA Cleanup - 50 neighbors, middle school students, OLA volunteers, and service workers cleanup OLA and area overlooking downtown, I-90, and Dearborn. 2000 hours.

Oct. 27: 70 EarthCorps staff, volunteers, and neighbors plant 300+ native trees, ferns, and shrubs in wooded area of Dr. José Rizal Park. 184 hours.

Nov. 9: Community Court, Lower Bayview Stairs: 7 service workers and 2 neighbors clear lower area adjacent to woods and Parks and Recreation property. 36 hours.

Nov. 10: 30 Theta Delta Chi UW volunteers clear upper view area at OLA entrance, and with 6 neighbors, path leading to lower OLA area completed with wood chips. Repairs made to gate and fence. 144 hours.

Total 2007 volunteer hours: 2299 hours

2008:
Jan. 19: 30 EarthCorps staff, volunteers, and neighbors removed 1400 sq ft of ivy and did maintenance on another 2200 sq ft of forested area in Dr. José Rizal Park. 120 hours.

Jan. 21: 30 University of Washington students and neighbors finish cutting back bramble at overview at Dr. José Rizal Park. 120 hours

March 8: 7 Community Court service workers and crew leaders clean up 14th Ave. S and Beacon Bluff preceding following week's Clean and Green event. 28 hours.

March 15: Clean and Green Event, organized by SPU, DON, and Parks and Recreation. 130 volunteers, EarthCorps staff, city and state workers work in OLA, eastern slope, and upper park, plus cleanup litter in streets down to business area. 520 hours.

April 10: 6 EarthCorps crew members stage 10 cubic yards of mulch for April 21 and 26 events. 36 hours.

April 12: 5 Service Workers and 2 crew leaders cleared 450 feet of blackberries on the south side of the Bayview Stairway, and ivy and clematis from 19 mature trees. 28 hours

April 14: 5 Lakeside School faculty members and 1 neighbor begin clearing cut saplings for future use on eastern slope of Dr. José Rizal Park. 24 hours.

April 17: 8 EarthCorps crew members continue staging mulch and improve access trail into woods from upper park for April 21 event. 32 hours

April 21: 175 volunteers, plus EarthCorps and AmeriCorps leads and neighbors, cleared ivy, blackberries, and hemlock, prepping for the fall planting. Participating groups included WSU King County Extension; students from Seattle Central Community College, University of Washington, and Seattle University; City Year and City Heroes Americorps youth volunteers; YMCA; and the Disney Company. The event was organized by Service for Peace and EarthCorps. Washington Governor Chris Gregoire published a proclamation honoring the event, which was also attended by U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott and several of his staff members. 700 hours
