Chinatown/ID - Rainier Valley

On the Cusp

Where Beacon Hill ends, the Dearborn cusp joins the Rainier and Duwamish valleys. The communities at this juncture include Chinatown, with Little Japan just uphill -  Little Saigon, with Yesler Terrace just up north - Jackson Place opening to Squire Park and the Central District. This is the most dynamically diverse spot on planet Seattle, rich in tradition, promise, and everyday life.

The discussion here on public safety reflects a shade of that dynamic. What happens north, happens south.

Problem Site Bulldozed in Upper Rainier Valley

A notorious spot on the southeast corner of South Weller Street and Rainier Avenue South was bulldozed by the property owner during winter 2006/2007 to eliminate criminal activity.

Drug dealers had taken up residence in a large blackberry thicket that dominated this lot on the hillside. In the center of the thicket, a mattress had been placed so a prostitute could do business and arrange drug deals.

The area is still dangerous, stuff from years of intravenous drug use. Broken glass, smashed trash and plastic, rusting and sharp pieces of metal, chunks of busted pallets litter the landscape.

Bulldozed lot at S. Weller St. and Rainier Ave. S.

Chinatown/ID Safety Meeting Summary

In July, 2006, City Council Member David Della, representatives from the Office of the Mayor, and numerous public safety representatives met with the Chinatown/ID community to discuss ongoing concerns.

The Chinatown/ID Safety Meeting Summary provides insight not only into specific public safety issues for that neighborhood, but for surrounding communities as well.
