A City at Work: Images from the Seattle Municipal Archives Photo Collection

Other Elected Officials: Introduction

Seattleites have elected council members since 1869, city attorneys/corporation counsels since 1876, and various other officials and judges at different times. The City Council is the legislative authority for the City, makes all of its laws, subject to the initiative and referendum powers of the people, sets official City policy, and has the authority to amend and approve the City's budget. The City Attorney manages the Law Department, which provides legal counsel to the City's elected officials and departments, and also prosecutes misdemeanors in Seattle Municipal Court.

The Archives holds more than 3,800 City Council and other City elected officials related images viewable from the Photograph Collection Index. Hundreds more elected City officials photos taken after 1962 may be searched and viewed by visiting the Seattle Municipal Archives.
