Strength & Stamina: Women in the Fire Department

newsletter
The Sports Association was an active branch of the Seattle Fire Department in the first half of the 20th century. A baseball team, an orchestra, and a trio were all organized under this branch at different times. In 1915, the band travelled to San Francisco to participate in the Seattle Day and Washington State Day ceremonies at the Panama-Pacific Exposition. By 1930, the Department had an eleven-piece orchestra, but no band. The orchestra and the trio performed at "non-competitive jobs" around the region, raising money for the Relief Association.
