Each board has five members from backgrounds intended to represent the players in the development process:

  • Design professional representative
  • Development representative
  • Community representative
  • Local residential representative
  • Local business representative

Board members must live in the City of Seattle.

Terms and Appointments
Board members serve two-year terms; terms may be renewed once. Members receive no financial compensation. Board members are appointed by the Mayor and City Council.

2012 Openings
Each April, the Mayor and City Council appoint new volunteers to serve on the Design Review Board.

On April 4, 2012, four board positions will open as retiring board members' terms expire. The deadline to submit an application for one of these positions is December 9, 2011. The list of open positions for 2012 is in the Appendix of the Design Review Board member application.

Applicants should have:

  • knowledge of or interest in architecture, urban design and the development process;
  • the ability to listen, communicate effectively, and manage public meetings;
  • a passion for community design and development;
  • the ability to work well with others under pressure; and
  • the commitment to prepare for and attend two evening meetings a month.

Prior experience with community or neighborhood groups is a plus.

All board members must reside within the Seattle city limits. Women, persons with disabilities, sexual minorities and persons of color are encouraged to apply.

Design Guidelines

Thirty design review guidelines for multifamily and commercial buildings--along with neighborhood-specific supplements--form the backbone of the City's Design Review Program in Seattle's neighborhoods. Separate guidelines govern downtown development.

In early 2012, DPD will be updating the design guidelines for multifamily and commercial development.
