Dr. Schmid is Senior
Evaluation Specialist and Director of the Active Community Environments
(ACES) workgroup, Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity,
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ACES is exploring
how urban design and transportation infrastructures influence
levels of physical activity and health in the community. Examples
of basic research supported by ACES include the development
of walkability audit tools and measuring the effects of community
design on levels of walking, biking and health conditions such
as obesity. Applied examples include the Kids-Walk-to School
program and efforts in Connecticut to rehabilitate a city park
and
trail. Dr. Schmid also provides technical assistance in the
design, implementation and evaluation of health programs to
domestic and international agencies. Recent examples of international
assistance include development of national and regional policy
strategies for prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Russia
and improving community based maternal health care in Tanzania.

Smith |

Mr.
Smith is a transportation planner and civil engineer with twenty
years of experience. He has been responsible for managing numerous
high profile transportation projects around the region including
transit corridor studies, arterial and highway design projects.
He is currently working on the Alaskan Way Viaduct alternatives
development and EIS preparation.
Prior to re-joining PB, he held
a four-year appointment as the City of Seattle's Regional Transit
Manager and Assistant Director for Transportation Planning and
Policy. He was responsible for coordinating all City of Seattle
efforts related to the Sound Transit. In addition, he oversaw
the City of Seattle's Transportation Policy and Planning group,
which is responsible for numerous transportation policy, planning
and program development initiatives.
Jared is a Seattle native and has been very active with Seattle
neighborhood issues as a past elected member of Seattle's Central
Area Planning Committee, and co-founder of the Central Area
Development Association. Other past activities include Vice
President, Consulting Engineers Council of Washington, Member
of the Board of Directors and Transportation Committee chair,
American Public Works Association, Washington Chapter
