To ensure the safety of children and youth using our pools, in order
for swimmers younger than 18 to go into the deep end, Seattle Parks
and Recreation requires a swim test. The test consists of swimming two
widths of the pool. While crawl stroke is preferred, alternate methods
of swimming can be acceptable if the child is swimming with the body
in a prone position and is making good forward progress. For additional
safety, the test may be more stringent if the pool is really crowded.
Final determination is based on the judgment of the lifeguard on duty.
Alternately, the child can take the swim test using a personal flotation
device (life jacket). Children who pass this modified test are allowed
in the deep using a life jacket.
Seattle Parks and Recreation Summer Swim League provides a positive
team experience for novice swimmers, and teaches the skills needed to
become competitive swimmers in a fun, low-pressure situation.
