Chado, the Way of Tea

Chado is a gift of hospitality that, through the medium of powdered green tea, offers sanctuary for the spirit in which to experience renewal.

Transmitted since the 16th century by the Urasenke Konnichian of Kyoto, Japan, Chado weaves together aesthetic, social and spiritual aspects of Japanese culture.

Experience Chado in the tranquil setting of the Shoseian teahouse in the heart of the Seattle Japanese Garden.

How To Take Part

1. To participate a tea ticket is required. Seating in the teahouse is limited to 10 guests. Please note, in Japan, business attire or kimono is customary, and jeans, bare feet, perfume, and rings are avoided. Please note you will be sitting on the tatami mats.  Presentations last approximately 40 minutes. We recommend that you make reservations. Sundays, March-November, and weekdays, June-August.

2. To observe, no reservations are necessary and the demonstration is free. The teahouse patio accommodates up to 20 visitors standing and sitting. Presentations last approximately 40 minutes. You can buy a tea ticket to enjoy a bowl tea and sweets. Saturdays, April-October.
