On September 30, 2004 Seattle Parks completed the acquisition of the remaining
.13-acre property for this new park site that will offer panoramic views
of Puget Sound, the Olympics and the Ship Canal. Funding sources included
the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, King County Conservation Futures Tax
fund, and community fundraising.
On August 23, 2002, Seattle Parks and Recreation purchased view property
totalling .43-acre for this new park in Fremont.
On July 29, 2002 Seattle City Council unanimously approved Pro Parks Levy
Opportunity Fund funding as one of the funding sources to acquire the Fremont
Peak site. This property has panoramic views of Puget Sound and the Olympic
Mountains, and was nominated by residents and business people from the Fremont
neighborhood.
On July 11, 2002 Friends of Fremont Peak Park held a community event to
celebrate progress on the potential park, and nearly 150 supporters attended.
In 2001, the community had begun to raise funds for the potential park site.
Parks and Recreation held a public meeting in August 2001 at B. F. Day School
to discuss the potential new park and determine the level of neighborhood
support. About 90 citizens attended.

| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
In January 2001, a property was put on the market for sale in Fremont. A
neighbor noticed the trees on the property and the sweeping views and envisioned
a park there. The citizen started talking with residents and business groups
in the community and a private donor stepped forward to purchase the property
to preserve it until funding could be identified for public park purchase.
The community obtained a variety of funding sources toward the purchase,
including private and foundation grants and a Neighborhood Matching Fund
grant, and they successfully nominated it for the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity
Fund. County Conservation Futures Tax matching funds were also earmarked
for acquisition of the site.
Seattle Parks and Recreation's purchase of a portion of the property was
completed on August 23, 2002. An additional property was purchased in September
2004.
In 2003 the community began a public process through the Neighborhood Matching
Fund to create plans to develop park improvements at the site. Development
funds were provided through the second cycle of the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity
Fund and other funding sources, and park development will start in 2006.

Fremont Peak is a citizen-initiated project. For details

with their Fremont Peak display at a Pro Parks Levy Oversight Committee
meeting that addressed Opportunity Fund acquisition nominations.
In spring 2003, the community began a public planning process for future
development of the park, and hosted open houses at the site. For information,
