This new park located on Boren Ave. between Spruce and Fir streets is named after the late C. Paul Horiuchi, one of Seattle’s best known and respected artists, for his invaluable cultural contributions to the life of the city. This .28-acre site provides views of Mount Rainier and Rainier Valley, and the Pac Med Building. Community Development Block Grant funds contributed to the design and construction of the new park, which includes stairs leading to the site from Boren Avenue, a small plaza, new trees, landscaping, and irrigation.

Prior to finding recognition as an artist, Horiuchi owned an auto body shop some two blocks from the park on 12th Avenue near Fir Street. More information on Horiuchi is available at the web site listed below.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This site was created when Boren Avenue was cut through the neighborhood in 1949. Prior to this the parcel had buildings on it that fit within the rectangular grid of the city streets. The remnant parcel was transferred to the Seattle Parks Department in 2003 from another City department. The park was designed by the firm of SvR and was completed in December 2003.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, neighborhood representatives gathered with the family Paul Horiuchi and the arts community to dedicate one of Seattle's newest parks: Horiuchi Park.
