Sustainable Building & Development

Because the Parks department is committed to sound environmental practices and the associated benefits of sustainable design and construction, the Planning and Development Division is implementing a program to include sustainable features in all capital projects, including buildings under 5000 square feet and site development projects.

The intent of this program is to encourage design and development practices which:

  • reduce operational and maintenance costs
  • reduce initial and ongoing adverse impacts to the environment
  • increase the ecological function of landscape and natural areas
  • increase the comfort, health and safety of parks visitors and building occupants

Yesler Community Center
Our latest LEED project -- the new
Yesler Community Center

The City of Seattle's sustainable building policy requires new City facilities over 5,000 square feet to attain the Silver level of the US Green Building Council's LEEDTM rating system. The High Point and Yesler community center projects are LEEDTM registered projects. In addition, the Parks Department is proud to announce the dedication of the City's first Gold rated LEEDTM building, the Carkeek Environmental Learning Center.
