Seattle Weed & Seed Program HISTORY of SOUTHEAST SITE The Southeast Seattle Weed & Seed site was awarded Official Recognition in 1997. In 2003, the site’s boundaries were changed significantly, and it received approval for an additional five years of funding. A recent evaluation showed the site to be an area much improved through the efforts of Weed & Seed, but an area, too, that continues to need innovative and vigilant efforts. Focus during this past year of Weed & Seed operations has been on strengthening relationships between law enforcement and community members, increasing police presence in crime hotspots jointly identified by the community and police, reducing effects of crime for residents (especially minors), and on strengthening partnerships with federal, state, and other local law enforcement partners. SITE ACHIEVEMENTS Weed & Seed has forged numerous partnerships within the site to ensure long-term improvement of this area, including collaborations with the Rainier Beach Merchants Association, South Seattle Crime Prevention Council, Rainier Beach Coalition for Community Empowerment, Rainier & Othello Safety Association, Seattle Neighborhood Group, and Washington Insurance Council. The Seattle Neighborhood Group sponsors crime free rental property management training within the site, as well as partners with the Washington Insurance Council to offer mini-façade improvement grants for local businesses in the site. Since 2002, the Washington Insurance has provided over $85,000 in funding for community projects in the site. CONTACTS Law Enforcement: Lt.
