MAYOR SCHELL TO HOST REGION-WIDE MAYORS CONFERENCE

NOVEMBER 10, 1998

On Tuesday, November 10, Seattle Mayor Paul Schell will host a day-long meeting of the Cascadia Mayors Council. The Cascadia Mayors Council includes 29 mayors representing cities throughout the Cascadia region from Vancouver, British Columbia to Springfield, Oregon. The mayors will spend the day in Seattle discussing issues of regional importance.

Topics for the day include a forum on public safety and community policing, facilitated by Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper; a presentation from Mayor Philip Owen of Vancouver, B.C. on community partnerships; and a variety of forums and discussions on transportation issues that will take place throughout the afternoon.

Keynote speaker for the session is leading author and journalist Neal Peirce. In 1975, Peirce began the United States’ first national column focused on state and local government themes, which continues to be syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group. Peirce will also facilitate some of the day’s sessions.

A press conference is planned to follow the lunch/keynote event at 1:30 p.m., with media invited to attend the entire session.
