Jefferson Park, which graces the crest of Beacon Hill with premier views to downtown Seattle, Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains, and even Mt Baker to the northeast, was part of the original Olmstead park plan for Seattle. Developed in the early 1900s, it was a treasure to the neighborhood and well used by the richly diverse local population. Overtime, many of the original park spaces were given away to other interests. By the 1990s, much of the park was obscured behind barbed-wire fences and low on the priority list for park maintenance and development. In fact, there was so little usable park space left that locals simply referred to the area as Jefferson Park Golf Course.

The Jefferson Park Alliance (JPA) was formed by neighborhood residents and other park users as an advocacy voice for Jefferson Park. Our mission is to create a park that can once again be loved and used by the community, and reflects the intent of the Olmsted Brothers’ plan. Today, Jefferson Park is in the process of revitalization having received $8 million from the ProParks funding levy. A major redevelopment is underway: A new gymnasium was completed in 2004, new walking paths around the golf courses and along Cheasty Boulevard are complete; and garden beds flourish on the hill. Soon Seattle Public Utilities will be decommissioning the North Reservoir and reconstruct the South as a buried reservoir. The added space (with stunning views) will help put back the “park” in Jefferson Park

To continue our work, the JPA needs your input and your energy. There’s no formal membership or requirements other than to want to help grow Jefferson Park.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME

Get involved — Make a difference

Jefferson Park Alliance is YOU. We are a volunteer organization and everyone is welcome. Opportunities to get involved include:

  • Participation in planning and protecting your park.
  • Special community plantings and garden maintenance events. Usually spring and fall.
  • Monthly gardening parties - held the 1st Saturday of each month (March-October).
  • Watering - the gardens are watered by volunteers throughout the summer. If you are able to help occasionally with this task, please contact us!

Summer Gardening Parties in the Park

The Jefferson Park Alliance maintains many of the planting beds in the park. Volunteers like you help them thrive.

  • 1st Saturday of every month, 10AM – 1PM
  • Meet at the Lawn Bowling Clubhouse – West of the driving range.
  • Tools and gloves provided, or bring your favorites.

To receive information about special events, or reminders for monthly activities contact JPAlliance@hotmail.com or phone 206.323.1792.

Special thanks to Kit Harris of Act 2 Landscaping who volunteers her time and expertise to Jefferson Park.
