Invitation to Comment on a Long-Term Flood Control Project in Madison Valley
The Seattle City Council Environment, Emergency Management and Utilities Committee will hear comments from the public on Seattle Public Utility’s plans to improve long-term flood control in the northwest portion of Madison Valley. The NW Diversion and Washington Park Storage option for Madison Valley is a direct response to recent flooding and drainage problems. Following outreach to the community, thorough and thoughtful consideration of the options, and weighing the benefits of two primary options, Seattle Public Utilities is proposing a long-term solution to flooding in the area in order to protect the lives of local residents and their property. The preferred option funds a constructed pipe and storage system that does not require extensive property condemnation or relocation of Madison Valley residents.
An ordinance relating to stormwater and flood control by Seattle Public Utilities; selecting a preferred alternative for implementing a long-term flood control project in Madison Valley, and removing a proviso in the 2008 City Budget that limits expenditures on that project.
The text of the legislation to be considered may be accessed here. Copies are also available via email by making a request to Rob.Gala@seattle.gov.
The legislation includes:
- $24-33 million in funding for stormwater and sewer flow storage and diversion for the northwest portion of Madison Valley.
- 2 million gallon storage capacity to be located just south of the Washington Park playfield, in the Arboretum.
- Expansion of the existing above-ground stormwater storage facility in the 100 block of 30th Ave. E and E John Street from 1 million gallons to 1.8 million gallons.
