Welcome to Critical Crossings
This site is dedicated to improving pedestrian safety in Seattle by posting images of traffic intersections and crosswalks submitted by citizens who believe intersections are critical to their safety. Keep in mind that the City of Seattle is obligated to provide streets, including intersections, which are reasonably safe for ordinary travel. This does not mean free from any and all potential hazards. No intersection or crosswalk is reasonably safe if drivers and pedestrians do not exercise necessary care.
I will be accepting digital photos beginning Wednesday,
April 30, 2008. The first pictures will be posted by the middle of May. I will add new ones monthly.
I invite you to snap a picture of an intersection and email a digital version to the address below. Please be sure to format your photograph according to the instructions below. Sorry, but I will not be able to post photos that are not formatted accordingly nor will I be able to post hard copy photos you might want to snail-mail me.
The information provided by citizens will be used, together with other sources of information and engineering judgments, to develop priorities in improving pedestrian safety. Suggesting changes or improvements to an intersection or a crosswalk does not mean that the City will make the suggested changes or improvement because the changes may not be warranted under existing standards or because the City’s professional engineering staff may not agree that changes are needed.
To submit your entries:
- Email your digital photos to my legislative assistant at frank.video@seattle.gov. In the subject line type: "Critical Crossings".
- Name the cross streets of each intersection you submit, i.e. "Slowpoke Avenue North and Busy Boulevard Southwest".
- Include any comments you wish to make about each intersection you submit.
- Submit images in JPG or GIF format. The image should be 640 x 480 pixels or larger. To insure quality, images smaller then 640 x 480 pixels will not be posted on this site.
- Entries that do not include a photo, or a comment regarding a posted photo, will be forwarded to the Seattle Department of Transportation. Please limit your entries to crossings within Seattle city limits.
I will catalogue the intersections and keep them posted here. New photos will be added each month along with comments on photos received from web site visitors.
Each person submitting a photo or comment will be assigned a unique 'Respondent #', allowing viewers to see which postings a person submits while allowing for anonymity. If you prefer having your email address listed with your postings so people can contact you, please indicate that in your email.
If you are interested in information about legislation, projects and general issues impacting pedestrian safety, you can sign up to receive my pedestrian safety bulletins by emailing robin.matisse@seattle.gov. In the subject line type: "Add to pedestrian safety list."
If you are interested in a broader range of issues affecting you, then please sign up for Urban Politics, the longest running email newsletter on civics in Seattle. To subscribe, simply email urbanpolitics-subscribe@speakeasy.net, while leaving the subject line and message body blank.
