NE 40th St / University Bridge, map

The street (Lincoln Way turning into NE 40th St) is one way going west; however, there is almost no visibility at the crosswalk. The picture is taken standing on the curb leaning into the street. I have also included a picture taken mid-crosswalk. Cars coming to this crosswalk are coming off Roosevelt, generally, and often are traveling fairly quickly.
Seattle Department of Transportation (SDoT) Response
SDOT shares you concern for pedestrian safety. The crosswalk under the University Bridge (which is actually on NE 40th Street) is approached from the north via a staircase or a steep path. There is little landing space adjacent to the road and the retaining wall (that holds up the bridge) may require pedestrians to look before stepping into the roadway.
While marked crosswalks are used in some circumstances to identify preferred crossing locations, sometimes a marked crosswalk is used to raise driver awareness of where pedestrians are already crossing, and where visibility may be limited. To raise awareness of this crossing under the University Bridge, we have pedestrian signs on the south side of the roadway facing in either direction. SDOT has initiated a program to install pedestrian flags at some crossing locations. We will consider this location for pedestrian flags.
