"A Diamond in the Rough"
March 16, 2004
What's tougher than finding a needle in a haystack?
A sunbeam in Seattle in November?
How about a City Light crew, asked to locate a diamond ring that had fallen
into an electrical vault?
The owner, Vashon Islander Mike Jennings, was feeding a meter near Sixth and
Virginia when he lost the valuable ring. Jennings didn't notice the loss until later in the day.
Heartsick, he and his wife Jeri checked the site by flashlight that night. They conluded the
ring must have slipped through a grate in the sidewalk and tumbled down into the electrical vault.
The next morning, Jeri dialed Joan Walters, City Light's deputy superintendent for
customer services. Jeri says, "I asked Wlaters if she was at all the right person. No, she
admitted, but said she'd be happy to coordinate the people to launch the search."
Although it seemed a hopeless task, a three-person crew - Ralph Kefgen, Dawn Nelson,
and Morgan Rice- immediately rose to the occasion. They sifted through leaves, broken
glass and debris. Rice finally located the ring, which was returned to the exstatic owner.
You'd be happy, too, if it were your ring. Mike brought along a photo and appraisal to verify
ownership. The appraisal pegged the ring's worth at more than $7,000.
To the City Light Team: priceless.
