Arts Issues

Public Art

The Mayor and I have proposed to permanently dedicate 20% of our City's admissions tax revenue to new arts spending. This is intended to add to our City's current arts spending, which does not presently come anywhere close to meeting the needs of Seattle artists and arts groups. The Seattle Arts Commission is currently working out the details of the proposal and I anticipate passage of the authorizing legislation through my Committee before year's end.

In the mean time, I have not forgotten the importance of increasing our City's Percent For Art allocation. Just as spending on individual artists and arts groups needs an increase, I believe that our Percent For Art program deserves one too in order to better respond to the increasing amount & complexities of development in Seattle. I will keep that on my agenda to take up in the future.

Here's a little history on the % For Art Program and the proposed legislation.
