Council Honors Uwajimaya CEO Tomio
Moriguchi
Proclamation complements Moriguchi’s
receipt of Torch of Liberty Award
SEATTLE — Recognizing his
commitment to civil rights and local community causes, the Seattle City Council
has proclaimed this week "Tomio Moriguchi Week," honoring the civic
patron and CEO of Uwajimaya, Inc.
"Among the top business exports of Seattle are Boeing
planes, Starbucks Coffee and Uwajimaya products," said Councilmember
Margaret Pageler, who sponsored the proclamation. "Despite his business
acumen and commercial success, most people associate Tomio Moriguchi with
support of Seattle’s International District and an unflagging dedication to
individual liberty and civil rights."
On May 15, the Pacific Northwest Region of the
Anti-Defamation League, on the occasion of its 60th Anniversary, will honor
Moriguchi with its 2003 Torch of Liberty Award, an annual award recognizing
exemplary community service, philanthropy and contributions to democratic
ideals.
The Council proclamation "urges all Seattleites to
emulate the virtues of community responsibility and commitment to ideals that
are the examples set by both Tomio Moriguchi personally, and by the Pacific
Northwest Anti-Defamation League."
