Energy Code Update: Key Dates and Summary of Changes

February 28, 2002

Residential Changes
In response to the energy crisis last year--and based on the wider availability of more energy-efficient windows--changes to Seattle's residential energy code requirements are the most significant since 1991 (read summary of changes, 43kb PDF).

Please note the two key changeover dates:

  • Through June 30, 2002, use the 2000 Washington State Energy Code
  • Starting July 1, 2002, use the 2001 Washington State Energy Code**

Nonresidential Changes
Part of Seattle's long-term conservation strategy, the updated non-residential energy code exceeds national efficiency standards by nearly 20 percent (read summary of changes, 62kb PDF).

Please note the following tri-phase changeover dates:

  • Through February 28, 2002, use the 2000 Washington State Energy Code and the 2000 Seattle Energy Code.
  • Between March 1-June 30, 2002, use the 2000 Washington State Energy Code and the 2001 Seattle Energy Code.
  • Starting July 1, 2002, use the 2001 Washington State Energy Code and the 2002 Seattle Energy Code.*
