In July 2003 DCLU plans to recommend approval of a specific
set of design guidelines for the Northgate neighborhood to
City Council. Public comment on the draft
guidelines is encouraged in advance through July 15, 2003.
The Northgate Design Guidelines aim to carry forward many
of the urban design objectives included in the 1993 Northgate
Area Comprehensive Plan. They are intended to help bridge
the gap between long-range planning policies and prescriptive
zoning requirements, recognizing that there are often more
effective ways to achieve design excellence than can be anticipated
by regulatory standards.
When approved by City Council, these guidelines will augment
existing Citywide Design Guidelines and together outline the
design objectives to be met by new development proposed within
Northgate neighborhoods, including:
- encouraging variety and quality in architectural design;
- promoting well-proportioned and active streets; and
- enhancing pedestrian scale, amenity and comfort.
Seattle's existing neighborhood-specific design
guidelines address specific design concerns that have
historical, cultural and architectural significance and offer
many suggestions for how new developments can enhance the
public realm while being sensitive to the historical context.
