This exhibit explains Green Factor landscaping standards, which were adopted in 2006 for Seattle’s commercial zones. The Green Factor is innovative in that it recognizes the functional value of landscapes in addition to their aesthetic benefits. Its unique scoring system increases design flexibility and encourages a more sustainable urban environment by providing a menu of landscape features including trees, shrubs, green roofs, vegetated walls, permeable paving, and food cultivation. In recognition of the Green Factor’s potential to improve quality of life and help mitigate climate change, the U.S. Conference of Mayors awarded Seattle a USCM Livability Award in 2008.
In addition to commercial zones, Green Factor standards are proposed for multifamily residential zones and South Downtown. To learn about recent updates to the Green Factor, please visit:www.seattle.gov/dpd/Permits/GreenFactor/Overview/.
