Legislation: Station Area Planning

Duration of Station Area Interim Overlay District Extended

Updated April 25, 2001

In March 1999, Council approved Ordinance 119394, the Station Area Interim Overlay District. As interim measures, the Overlay District prohibits auto-oriented uses incompatible with transit-oriented development and revised parking standards within approximately one-quarter mile of proposed Sound Transit light rail stations. The intent of the interim measures was to preserve opportunities for transit oriented development in station areas while station area planning was underway. The expiration date of interim measures has been extended by six month increments three times.

The interim measures are currently set to expire on September 1, 2001, unless the duration of the interim measures is further extended or replaced by the new permanent Station Area Overlay District. The Executive has proposed and issued a SEPA determination for revised legislation that would establish the permanent overlay district as well as legislation that would apply the overlay and rezone certain properties near rail stations.
