Candidate Information

2008 Candidate Information
Updated May 30, 2008

This information is specifically for candidates who participated in the Oral Board interviews held April 26 - May 2, 2008.

Oral Board #2 Results:  Results from the Oral Board #2 exam have been mailed out to each candidate’s mailing address via U.S. Mail.  If you did not receive your results letter, you should email Colleen.Lafferty@seattle.gov or call 206-615-0581.

For candidates who passed the exam, the letters will contain your scores, as well as your ranking on the Firefighter Register (the Register is the list of those candidates who have passed the written exam and both oral boards).  The names and addresses of those candidates who are in the top 25% of the Register will be sent to the Seattle Fire Department.  Candidates who do not place in the top 25% of the Register will remain on the Register, which will be in effect for a minimum of one year.

Please note that due to a postponement in the current hiring process, candidates on the recently established Firefighter Register will most likely not be contacted by the Seattle Fire Department regarding pre-employment processing until early 2009.

Call the Recruitment Hotline at (206) 386-9078 for updates on the current pre-employment hiring process.

2. When will these candidates be contacted?
You may call the Fire Department recruitment hotline at (206) 386-9078 to stay up-to-date with the latest pre-employment process scheduling information.

Please note that due to a postponement in the hiring process, candidates on the recently established Firefighter Register are not likely to be contacted by the Fire Department regarding pre-employment processing until early 2009.  It’s important that you maintain an up-to-date mailing address by emailing any changes to:  Colleen.Lafferty@seattle.gov

Call the Recruitment Hotline at (206) 386-9078 periodically to check on the status of the pre-employment process.

4. What if I am very close to being in the top 25%?
The Seattle Fire Department will determine the number of positions to be filled for the next recruit class.  The Fire Department will then receive the names of the top 25% of the register, plus one additional name for each position to be filled over one (for example, if Fire wanted a projected recruit class of 16 members, the Department would receive the top 25% of the register plus an additional 15 names).

5. How many positions are typically filled?
Approximately 30 positions are typically filled by the Fire Department off of one register.  This will vary according to the Fire Department’s needs, which are continuously assessed throughout the year.

6. What if I am not in the top 25% of the Register?
Your name will remain on the Register until the next exam process is completed and a new Register is established.

7. Will my ranking number remain the same for the life of the Register?
Your ranking number will likely change during the life of the register, for various reasons including (but not limited to):  candidates on the list may get hired, may withdraw, may submit veteran’s preference documentation, etc.  Changes in their ranking may change your ranking number.
