West Queen Anne - Station 20
About the Station Station 20 is one of the smallest stations in the system and houses one engine company. This 55 year-old building is in poor condition, has long reached the end of its useful building life, and does not meet the emergency response operational requirements of the Seattle Fire Department. The station is too small to accommodate modern apparatus and staffing levels, all building systems are outdated, the building is out of regulatory compliance in many areas, and the site is too small to accommodate an adequately-sized building. About the Project Because of the difficulty of finding an appropriate alternative site, due in part to steep slopes and seismic stability of soils, we planned to rebuild the station on an expanded site at its current location. However, we have been unable to obtain City Council approval to acquire the property needed to expand the station. Click here to read a September 13, 2006 letter from the Mayor to the community regarding efforts to acquire the needed property for expansion. The project will not go forward unless we are able to obtain approval to acquire the property needed for expansion. If and when the station is rebuilt, it will meet all current seismic safety codes and provide the full complement of services typical of a station housing one engine and one reserve unit. Given the proximity of this station to the Lake Washington ship canal, a new Station 20 will also accommodate a new storage area for marine rescue equipment that will serve the city's north end.
