In the spring of 1903, John Charles Olmsted, of the Olmsted Brothers firm
of Brookline, MA. and stepson of Frederick Law Olmsted, arrived to survey
the Seattle area and create a plan for open spaces in Seattle. This

of Park Commissioners in 1903. Using materials from the Manuscripts,
Special Collections, University Archives (MSCUA) Division of the
Libraries, the display presents the contributions the Olmsted Brothers
made to the landscape of the University of Washington campus, and to the
parks in the University Neighborhood. Included in the exhibit are Ravenna
and Cowen Parks, the University campus, and the Washington Park Arboretum.

Location: "Vistas of Green" is currently on display in the exhibit room of the
Suzzallo Library on the University of Washington campus. The exhibit room
is just inside the main entrance to Suzzallo on the left. The exhibit
will be in place until August 29th, and may be viewed whenever the library
is open. Library hours and directions to the Suzzallo library are

Thursday, August 7, 6:30pm
Seattle Asian Art Museum and Volunteer Park Conservatory

Last fall Richard Hartlage, Associate Partner at Dietz/Hartlage and author of the book Bold Visions, met with Volunteer Park Conservatory Senior Gardener, Stephanie Johnson-Toliver to discuss the possibility of his participation as designer of a signature bed at the Conservatory to celebrate Volunteer Park's 100-year Olmsted legacy. Some of the highlights include: Ensete "Black Banana", Colocasia, Brugmansia, Canna, Dahlias, Millet 'Purple Majesty', ornamental grasses as well as garden art.

To further celebrate the Olmsted Centennial and the design of Volunteer Park and Seattle's Emerald Necklace, the Friends of the Conservatory is presenting an evening lecture and reception on August 7, 2003. Mr. Hartlage will present a slide show and lecture entitled "Planting with Pizzazz" at the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. Walking Tour by Arthur Lee Jacobson: Common Wild Plants of Seattle

Sunday, 1:00 - 4:00pm
Location: Seward Park
Cost $20 (cash or check)
Tour limited to 15 people

Late summer identification of the most common plants growing in Seattle. Learn the abundant trees, shrubs, ferns, wildflowers, weeds, etc. and about natural history and human uses. August is a dry time in Seattle but a few woodland flowers remain, such as Heal-all and the last of Hedge-nettles, as well as a few Candyflowers, Foamflowers and Avens. However, colorful berries are a prize! The lake edge has plenty of native Asters and sword fern spore-dust makes groundcovers rusty brown.

For more information about exact meeting place, registration and materials, please contact Arthur Lee Jacobsen, 206-328-8733, alj@consultant.com
