Tet

Vietnamese people around Seattle come to Seattle Center and celebrate Lunar New Year. Tet is open the ceremony with firecrackers and the famous dragon dance from Vietnamese Buddhist Youths Association in the US.

Ancestral Homage Ritual is a Vietnamese tradition to pay homage to ancestor during Tet. With incense in hand, family members stand in front of the ancestral shrine, offer prayers and ask for blessings for the New Year. At the festival, elders dress in traditional costumes and represent Vietnamese community in performing this ancient ritual. Vietnamese celebrate each others birthday during Tet by giving lucky money in little red envelopes to children, li` xi`, and offering good wishes for longevity to the elders.


There are also special activities for children ages 6-12. They can make cards and button, using stamps with Tet motifs, coloring books with pictures about Tet, and a various live performance, cultural shows and skits. Youth in Seattle also put together an unforgettable cultural performance. The show feature fold and modern dances, cultural songs and fun skits. The fashion show provides an exciting new perspective on the Vietnamese traditional costumes. Live concert is also performed during the cultural show by singers from California and some in Seattle area, Martial Arts is also performed by Vietnamese Youth Martial Arts of Washington.

Vietnamese proverbs on banners remind the community of teachings that have been passed down from generation to generation. The use of bamboo, pictorial or real, depicts the proverb "Tre gia`, ma(ng mo.c." It can be loosely translated to be." As the bamboo grows older, the bamboo shoot becomes bigger and stronger."


Moon Festival

On the 15th day of August according to the Lunar calendar is the Moon Festival or the Children Festival. In Seattle, Moon Festival is celebrated in Seattle area. Every year, children around Seattle go there have fun with other kids. They can play, eat the moon cake, and play the lantern together.

There are some other places that celebrate Moon Festival for children too. Like at Vietnamese Catholic Community, Vietnamese Buddhism temples, etc.


Merry Christmas

Every winter, on the 25th day of December is the birth of Jesus. All Catholic and Christian people go to churches and celebrate Jesus's birthday. For Vietnamese Catholic Community is celebrate Christmas by having a midnight mass right on the Christmas Eve. The mass is celebrated with the combine of all the choirs to sing Christmas' songs.


Buddha's Birth Anniversary

On the 8th day of the 4th moon is the Buddha's Birth, Enlightenment and Death. This day is celebrated at pagodas and temples, which, like many private homes, are festooned with lanterns. People come to the temple to donate money and make offerings to the temples.


Vu Lan

On the 15th day of 7th moon is the Vu Lan Festival. Every year, we celebrate it at Buddhist temples. This day is for children to show their respect and love to their parents and elder.


Hai Ba Trung (The Trung Sisters)

Me Linh Women Assosiation is celebrated The Trung Sisters every year on March 28 to remember the two heroine of the Vietnamese women in 39 AD that fought the Chinese out of Vietnam and brought freedom to the Vietnamese.
