After-school ServicesCulturally Relevant Support for School-age ChildrenSeattle is a diverse city that includes families from many different ethnic and cultural groups. Many of these families face language, cultural and financial barriers that make it difficult to support their children. The City of Seattle funds five culturally specific child care programs for children ages five through 14. These programs serve hundreds of children in various neighborhoods in central, south, and north Seattle. Contracted agencies provide children with an environment where they can identify and bond with peers from similar backgrounds and discuss issues related to their culture. The programs provide bilingual support, homework assistance, cultural awareness and family involvement, as well as a variety of educational, social and recreational activities. The City of Seattle is providing approximately $197,667 in 2008 to nonprofit, community-based organizations providing culturally relevant support for school age children. 2008 Funded Agencies and Programs
