Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Project

The Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Project increases the availability of healthy foods and children’s physical activity in child care, after-school programs, and Early Childhood Education and Assistance (ECEAP) Programs. This 20-month project is funded through March 2012 by a federal “Communities Putting Prevention to Work” (CPPW) grant awarded to Public Health - Seattle and King County. Public Health then granted funds to the Seattle Human Services Department’s Early Learning and Family Support and Aging and Disability Services divisions. The goal of CPPW is to make policy, systems and environmental changes in local community organizations, schools, businesses and governments to reduce and prevent obesity and tobacco use and exposure.

Specific HEAL strategies:

  • Implement the “Farm to Table Child Care Pilot Project” linking farmers and early learning and after-school providers to increase healthy meals and snacks in programs;
  • Incorporate new best practice standards into City program assessment and monitoring tools reaching over 12,000 Seattle children;
  • Partner with the City Food Systems Interdepartmental Team, Let’s Move, and other initiatives with similar goals.

City and community partners include Coalition for Safety and Health in Early Learning, Child Care Resources, School’s Out Washington, Washington State Department of Agriculture Farm to School Project, Seattle Parks and Recreation/Associated Recreation Council, HSD’s Summer Food Service Program, University of Washington’s Center for Public Health Nutrition, Puget Sound Food Network, FareStart, Puget Consumer Co-op Natural Markets, and King County Housing Authority.
