Family Support
Support Services for Deaf, Deaf/Blind,
and Hard of Hearing Parents
The City of Seattle provides funding for “Positive Deaf Parenting,” a parent education and support program offered through Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services. Parenting classes and workshops provide information and support that can help break generational abuse. ADWAS is open to all deaf, deaf/blind and hard of hearing parents. Services are provided by deaf and hearing teachers with interpreters for deaf and deaf/blind participants.
Parenting classes and workshops are scheduled quarterly and one-on-one parenting consultation is available by appointment.
Activities include:
- Positive Discipline class for parents with children age five and above
- Parenting Through Play class for parents with children age birth to three
- Parenting Teenagers class
- Talking to Your Kids about Drugs and Alcohol workshop
- A parent support group
- Special events for families throughout the year
All classes are free of charge and include a meal, child care for children under the age of five, and structured activities for children over the age of five.
