Public Health Initiatives and FundingInfant Mortality Prevention Network
While the overall infant mortality rate in King County has gone down over the last 20 years, infant mortality rates for African Americans are twice the county average and rates for Native Americans are four times the county average. The Infant Mortality Prevention Network includes eight community-based agencies that promote healthy pregnancies and reduce infant mortality. The Network’s agencies conduct outreach and education, and provide referrals for prenatal care, labor support, chemical dependency treatment, housing and basic needs support for high-risk pregnant adolescents. The City of Seattle has funded infant mortality programs since the early 1990s and other access and outreach services since 2001. City of Seattle General Funds are allocated through Public Health - Seattle & King County, the agency responsible for overseeing the program. In 2007, the City allocated $245,352 for Infant Mortality Prevention and assistance helping people access health insurance and other benefits. In 2008, we have committed $254,430 for these services.
