Area Agency on Aging

Aging & Disability Services in the Seattle Human Services Department serves as the Area Agency on Aging for the Seattle-King County region. The City of Seattle, King County and United Way of King County are the sponsors, and set agency policy.

Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) are local organizations across the nation that develop and promote services and options to maximize independence, quality of life and choice for older people, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers.

The Washington Association of Area Agencies (W4A) has 13 AAAs comprising county governments, regional councils, nonprofit organizations and Native American tribes.

Each AAA has an Area Plan on Aging and an Advisory Council on Aging, which is made up of volunteer citizens and guides the organization’s work. The Area Agency on Aging for Seattle-King was established in 1973. In 2006, its budget was about $31 million.

The 2008 AAA budget totals appropriately $51.2 million. The majority of the funding - $39 million or 76 percent - is federal funds, including Medicaid Title XIX for case management and home care, and Older Americans Act funds. About 9 percent - $4.8 million - comes from the City of Seattle General Fund, City utility revenues. State and other local funds make up the remaining 14 percent.

Some funding is issued, via a competitive process periodically conducted by the Seattle Human Service Department, to agencies in the community to provide the services needed.
