Community Crime Prevention and Juvenile Justice InitiativesSouth Park InitiativeThe South Park Initiative, launched in 2006, has a goal to reduce youth gang violence and criminal activity in the South Park neighborhood by providing comprehensive prevention, intervention and drug treatment services for South Park youth at risk of dropping out of school or engaging in criminal activities. Community-based agencies provide South Park Initiative services in partnership with South Park community leaders, parents, youth, other neighborhood groups, Seattle Public Schools, King County criminal justice officials and several City of Seattle departments. Services focus on low-income youth and families who live in South Park, go to school or work there, or spend time there. Through these programs, youth learn behaviors and skills that foster violence-free interactions and reduce gang involvement and criminal behavior. Parents and community members are educated about gang issues and crime prevention strategies. Other services include case management, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, after-school activities, computer-based academic support and family support. South Park Initiative services are funded with City of Seattle General Funds. The 2007 allocation is approximately $304,000. A competitive process for funding these services will be conducted in 2009. History The South Park Initiative began in January 2006 with funds provided by the Seattle Mayor’s Office in response to escalating gang activity and violence in South Park. This funding helped lay the groundwork for the South Park Action Agenda, a community-based, City of Seattle-staffed effort to develop new leadership across neighborhood demographics, identify existing and emerging issues that need to be addressed, and ensure that the South Park neighborhood remains a high priority for the City. South Park community members, youth, business representatives, service providers, and an interdepartmental team of City staff have since joined forces to develop the action agenda. They have identified priorities related to business and transportation, community engagement, environment and infrastructure, public safety and youth development, and made a series of recommendations to sustain, enhance and increase programs that support positive youth development and strengthen families in South Park. 2008 Funded Agencies and Programs Information For more information about Seattle Human Services Department-funded youth programs, call 206-386-1026 or e-mail youthservices@seattle.gov.
