Seattle Youth Employment Program

Seattle Youth Employment Program

The Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is a year-round academic support and work-readiness program for youth, ages 14-21. SYEP, operated by the Human Services Department, helps participants fulfill their educational goals and explore the world of work by providing educational support, leadership development and work training.

Participants are from low-income families, and 90 percent are youth of color. These youth have little or no work experience, and often struggle in school.

School Year Program

SYEP’s School Year Program focuses on youths’ academic needs to help them graduate from high school and identify post-secondary plans. Each SYEP participant works with a Youth Development Counselor to develop a plan to achieve academic, personal and employment goals. The program supports participants’ ability to meet these goals by providing after-school tutoring, job readiness training, career exploration, financial literacy, workshops, field trips, internships and case management.

The program is open to students enrolled in Seattle Public Schools’ high schools who meet the income and eligibility criteria. For more detailed information about eligibility, call 206-386-1375 or e-mail youthservices@seattle.gov.

Summer Internship Program

During the summer, the program places youth in seven-week paid internships to develop work readiness skills (i.e. showing up for work on time, proper work attire, communication skills, etc.) and provide exposure to the world of work. Internships take place in a range of sectors such as health care, education, recreation, skilled trades, social services and technology. Youth are provided with case management support and mentorship at their internships sites.

Eligibility criteria and number of slots available for the Summer Internship Program vary each year.

Employment Partners

The Seattle Youth Employment Program is also the lead agency for the Seattle Youth Employment Consortium which includes partner agencies Metrocenter YMCA, Sea Mar Community Health Center and YouthCare. The Consortium provides services and activities to economically disadvantaged youth aged 16 through 21, so they can achieve in school, access job training and higher education opportunities, and gain the skills needed to progress in well-paying careers. These Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funds are awarded through the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County.

SYEP also administers investments that provide employment services to youth participating in the City’s Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative (SYVPI). SYVPI Youth Employment programs are designed to serve high-risk youth who live or go to school in Central, Southeast, and Southwest Seattle. These services enable youth to develop job-readiness skills that help them cultivate positive career goals and pathways. SYVPI providers are King County Superior Court, Metrocenter YMCA, Powerful Voices, Seattle Public Schools, Southwest Youth and Family Services and Youth Venture.

SYEP is an equal opportunity employer and provider of employment and training services. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals of disabilities.
