Homeless Youth Housing

Housing is key to helping homeless young people leave life on the streets. To be successful, housing must be enhanced with intensive case management services, school, meals, job training, and money management and other life skills training.

The Seattle Human Services Department has funded agencies that provide shelter and transitional housing services to young people since 1985. Funding awards are determined through a competitive process that is conducted by the department at least once every four years. Funding during funding cycles depends upon program performance and funding availability. The current four-year cycle ends in 2010.

In 2008, the Human Services Department is allocating approximately $1.4 million in City of Seattle General Funds to homeless youth housing. This commitment allows the department to leverage an additional $1.8 million in federal funds for homeless youth housing programs in Seattle and King County.
