The Planning Commission is an independent commission that advises the Mayor, City Council and City departments on plans, goals, and policies affecting the city's physical development. Prior to 1980, it had a planning function and authority to hire planners as needed to carry out its program. The planning function was transferred to the Department of Community Development in 1980 and the Commission has since been responsible for studying planning issues, carrying out public involvement activities, and developing recommendations for executive and legislative consideration.
