Delridge Neighborhoods Accomplishments

In January, 1999, Seattle City Light's fourth Neighborhood Power Project began to help Southeast Seattle residents and businesses achieve 5 goals set by the local steering committee:
  1. save water and energy
  2. plant trees
  3. pick up litter
  4. save water and energy and pick up litter in schools
  5. serve those most in need
Through the Neighborhood Power Project, conservation staff from City Light and other City departments are using a community-based approach to market energy-efficient lighting, tree planting, recycling, Adopt-A-Street and home weatherization programs in Southeast Seattle.

On January 13, 2000, the Rainier Beach High School drama class performed Once Upon the Earth, an environmental play they wrote and produced as a result of the Southeast Seattle Neighborhood Power Project, to their school audience of 600 and a community audience of 100. The drama instructor said the students in the audience were excited by the ideas in the play and want to see or be in something like it again next year. The Cleveland High School drama class performed Trouble on Planet Terra for four elementary schools. These performances wrapped up the Southeast Seattle Neighborhood Power Project. Goals met and resources saved will be summarized and posted here soon.

Good news: Through the Neighborhood Weatherization Program and deliveries of compact fluorescent bulbs, the Southeast Neighborhood Power Project saved 190,500 kWh per year, exceeding the 83,850 kWh energy goal by 130%. The Southeast Neighborhood Power Project also saved 564,000 gallons of water per year.
