Power Content

Even though Seattle City Light's basic power mix already includes 87.9 percent clean hydro power, other renewable energy resources only make up about 2.5 percent. Most of this comes from the Stateline Wind Project in Eastern Washington and Oregon.

Green Up is your way to go beyond that.

In 2011, the Renewable Energy Credits supplied through the Green Up program will come from three new resources:

  • Geothermal Energy from the Raft River project in Idaho. Water heated deep in the earth's crust is pumped up and used to heat a "binary liquid" which forms a gas at lower temperatures than water. As this vapor expands, it spins a turbine which generates electricity.

  • Biogas Energy from Dairy Digesters in Washington and Idaho. Methane, which is much more harmful to the environment than C02, is produced by anaerobic fermentation of dairy waste, where it is captured and burned in an engine-generator to produce electricity.

  • Hydropower from irrigation canal projects in Idaho. Electricity is produced by turbine-generators powered by the force of running water in irrigation canals.
