Powerful Neighborhoods - FAQ

Q1. What is this program and why are we doing it?
A1. The goal of this program is to acquire energy savings by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs and providing low–flow showerheads and faucet aerators for thousands of homes located within the Seattle City Light territory.

Q2. Are there additional eligibility requirements?
A2. Customers must live in Shoreline and reside in a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6-unit home.

Q3. What if a customer calls and wants the products installed but does not live within the targeted area?
A3. We will explain that the program is in a pilot phase and that we may be serving their neighborhood depending on the success of this phase.

Q4. Who will hire the installers? What qualifications will they have?
A4. We will work with our partners who will hire and employ the installers. Each installer will be thoroughly vetted by the hiring organization including a background check and drug screening. Installers will be thoroughly trained to provide excellent customer service, correctly install the devices, provide accurate energy conservation advice and fill out the tracking and reporting forms.

Q5. How will installers be supervised?
A5. In addition to being supervised by the hiring organization, Seattle City Light will perform random follow–ups with customers, ride–alongs with installers and quality checks on all forms and reports turned in.

Q6. What is the process for a customer to get the free products?
A6. Customers may hear about the program from a friend or neighbor who received service from one of our installers, a letter from Seattle City Light, Light Reading, a news story, posters around town, flyers or newsletters distributed by community groups, a web page or a door–hanger left behind by one of the Powerful Neighborhoods team members. Interested customers may call (206) 449–1132 or email SCL_Install@seattle.gov to request a visit. The installer will go out at the scheduled time and perform the installations. In addition, customers may get a knock on their door from an installer who will either be able to do the install on the spot if the customer is willing or help them make an appointment for a visit at a later date.

Q7. How long will the program last?
A7. The program has been funded through 2011, serving each neighborhood for 6-8 weeks.

Q8. How will customers recognize the installers?
A8. Assuring the safety and security of both our program participants and installers is our highest priority. Each installer (view Powerful Neighborhoods Installer) will have photo ID and identifying clothing. Customers will get reminder calls the day before the installation date and will be given the name of the installer and approximate time of the visit. Customers can also call an Energy Advisor at 206-684-3800 if they have questions and/or concerns or to verify the installer's credentials.
