2009-10 School Programs

Our efforts to prepare 4th and 5th grade students for the future includes teaching them the fundamentals. Energy is fundamental in today’s world. Expand your “energy knowledge” and save time by signing up for these FREE programs taught by a certificated teacher. All programs address Washington State learning standards and supplement “Circuits and Pathways” or “Land and Water” science kits. Call Shelly Sherwood at (206) 684-3090 to schedule or complete this online form for classroom presentations and publications.

shrinking bigfoot Shrinking Bigfoot Assembly and Classroom Workshop

Our FREE live assembly show, Shrinking Bigfoot, for 3rd-5th grades will ignite school-wide interest in climate change by taking students on a fun and interactive adventure. The 4th and 5th grade classroom workshop will build on climate change concepts learned in the assembly by providing in-depth discussions partnered with hands-on activities Contact Triangle Associates for more information EMAIL: scl@triangleassociates.com or CALL: Jessica Graham at (206) 583-0655. Aligns with Essential Academic Learning Requirement 4-5 LS2D (Ecosystems can change slowly or rapidly. Big changes over a short period of time can have a major impact...).

Free Classroom Presentations for Fourth and Fifth Graders

Electrical Safety Makes Sense: Why is it that birds can land on a power line and yet an electrician working around household circuits must use extreme caution? Students explore these questions and experiment with the conductivity of water. Aligned with G.L.E. 1.2.3 (Know that substances are made of small particles).

Conserving Electricity: Using less electricity saves money and reduces global warming. Students extend their learning from circuits to large scale electricity production. They then conduct an experiment testing water flow and pressure. It all leads to addressing the question, “What are the effects of saving electricity and leaving more water behind our dams?” Aligned with G.L.E. 2.1.1 (Questioning)

Circuits and Solar Cells: Take a guess at where in the world the most solar energy systems are installed...Arizona? South Africa? Mojave Desert? Believe it or not, it’s Germany! And Seattle receives the same amount of sun. In this presentation, students safely wire solar cells together in series and parallel circuits, experiment with the effects, and calculate amperage. Aligned with G.L.E. 1.2.2 (Understand that energy can be transferred from one object to another and can be transformed from one form of energy to another).

Static Electricity 101: What do anti-static dryer sheets and metalized slippers found in operating rooms have in common? Both are conductive and are evidence of static electricity in our lives! Students explore the phenomenon of electrical charge by conducting simple experiments like rubbing plastic through their hair and seeing its effect on salt and pepper. They are also introduced to the concept of voltage through fun demonstrations with a Van de Graff generator. Aligned with GLE 3.1.1 (Understand problems found in ordinary situations in which scientific design can be or has been used to design solutions).

Call Shelly Sherwood at (206) 684-3090 to schedule or complete this online form for classroom presentations.

Free Field Trip

Working Water: Our “Working Water” field trip to Cedar Falls near North Bend lets students see the source of their electricity. Because the number of openings for field trips is limited, we try to show parity by targeting different communities each year. This year’s targeted community is Seattle’s Wallingford/Green Lake area. Give us a call and we’ll work to schedule you or place your name on a waiting list for this year’s trips. Aligned with GLE 1.2.1 (Analyze how the parts of a system go together, and how these parts depend on each other).

Contest

Hydropower Haiku: Looking for a way to integrate your science, writing, and social studies instruction? Here is a way to do it plus potentially win a $1,000 grand prize. Celebrate the way we make most of our electricity by having your students enter a hydropower haiku contest. The contest has different age categories so both students and teachers can win. Hydropower is worthy of our poetic expression. It’s not only a renewable energy source, but it’s elegant and has a significant place in Northwest history. Visit http://fwee.org/ for contest details. Contest ends Dec. 4th, 2009. Contact us to jump start your students’ thinking on hydropower with several models. Aligns with Writing GLE 2.2.1 (Demonstrates understanding of different purposes for writing).

Quick Fact: Seattle City Light’s Boundary Dam located in NE Washington has the fourth largest generating capacity of hydropower plants in the state. Grand Coulee has the largest.
