Report on Clean Seattle Initiative
Cleanup: Westlake/Downtown
Date of Cleanup: November 23 thru November 27th
Boundries: 2nd to 7th, Stewart to Pine
Departments: Parks, Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Transportation, City Light, Seattle Public Utilities, DCLU, Arts Commission, Department of Corrections, SPD Crime Prevention
Cleanup Activities:
- SCL repaired more than 500 lights in the downtown area in general for this event. All the reported lights that were out in the target area were replaced
or repaired.
- Department of Corrections staff helped plant flowers and clean up litter cans along the Pike and Pine street corridors.
- Metropolitan Improvement District (MIC) staff painted out graffiti along in all alleys along Pike and Pine including removal of graffiti from dumpsters.
SDOT Signs and Markings crews painted 3,337 feet of curb, cleaned 19 control cabinets, removed decals from 16 signs and replaced six no parking signs.
- SDOT crews also paved over potholes in alleys as requested by downtown businesses.
Miscellaneous:
- Bruce Bentley of Emerald City Disposal provided the MID with paint to spray out graffiti on dumpsters in the alleys.
- SDOT Street Maintenance crews placed 23 planters at 19 locations in the target area, filled the planters with eight yards of topsoil and flushed the planter locations.
- SDOT Night Shift crews swept the streets in the area, cleaned the alleys and emptied the litter cans. Night Shift also removed approximately 6,200 pounds of leaves.
- SDOT Landscape crews will continue to perform maintenance to the planted area in the Downtown core in partnership with staff from the Metropolitan Improvement District.
Volunteer Activity
- 20 MID staff volunteered to help cleanup litter and plant flowers and remove graffiti from alleys and buildings in the Westlake area.
- SPU provided staff to support and oversee the volunteers.
- Brenda Peters and others from the MID helped stencil 50 storm drains along Pike and Pine from 1st Avenue to 7th
- More than 150 plants were placed in planters along Pike Street. The plants will be watered by the MID staff on an ongoing basis.
