Community Development Projects
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provides HUD with $1 billion for approximately 1,200 state and local governments to invest in their own community development priorities. CDBG works to ensure decent affordable housing, to provide services to the most vulnerable in our communities, and to create jobs through the expansion and retention of businesses. CDBG is an important tool for helping local governments tackle serious challenges facing their communities.
Community Development Block Grant
On March 27, 2009, Mayor Greg Nickels announced Seattle will receive $3.3 million in CDBG -- above and beyond our annual CDBG allocation -- from HUD. The funds are to be used to support community development and affordable housing activities for those hit hard by tough economic times. After reviewing potential projects that meet the stringent requirements of the ARRA, on June 2, 2009, the City submitted its application outlining its proposed priority projects.

Seattle's Proposal
Seattle will spend $1.4 million to create jobs, with 51 percent of the jobs created going to low- to moderate-income people. Seattle will also make one-time capital investments totalling $950,000 in community facilities to support the delivery of human services, and $850,000 will be used to preserve and maintain existing senior housing. The remainder of the grant will be used for program administration.
