Community reflection at International Fountain, Memorial Garden dedication planned.
August 21, 2002 - Mayor Greg Nickels today invited the public to commemorate the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 tragedy with a "Community Reflection" at the International Fountain at Seattle Center. Community members are invited to gather and reflect on events of the last year and renew hope for the future.
"We will honor people we lost that day and the heroes we found - in our emergency services, our armed forces, and throughout our community," said Nickels. "September 11 wounded our nation and shocked our city, but that terrible day reminded us how much we value our freedoms and our unity. Let's stand together and support each other as we remember and look to the future."
The Community Reflection at the International Fountain will be open to the public throughout the day and night of September 11th. From dawn to dusk, the fountain will display remembrances such as photos, mementos, and other articles, and will be lit with candles as an expression of remembrance and eternal hope. Compost from flowers deposited at last year's Flower Vigil at the fountain will be handed out to the public, along with 20,000 flower bulbs donated by growers as a symbol of growth for the future.
At 3 p.m., Mayor Nickels, police and fire representatives and community members will dedicate the new Memorial Garden at Seattle Center. The garden is at the southwest corner of a two-acre landscaped green in the new Fisher Pavilion, which replaces the old Flag Pavilion. Some of the compost from last year's flower vigil will also be tilled into the garden.
