Statement on the Death of Coretta Scott King
01/31/06
Dear Friends:
I am saddened to hear of the passing of Coretta Scott King. She steadfastly
supported her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., through the civil rights
movement and assumed his responsibilities after his assassination in 1968.
Sharing her husband’s dream “that one day this nation will rise
up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be
self-evident: that all men are created equal,” King was considered the
first lady of the civil rights movement.
We recently celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, an honor King fought
for a decade to be recognized. The national holiday was first celebrated in
1986.
King continued her husband’s legacy with dedication
and dignity founding the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social
Change, and raising their four children, Yolanda, Martin III, Dexter and
Bernice.
Today we honor this extraordinary leader and make certain that her dream
lives on in us.
