September 11 Memorial Message
09/11/06
Dear City Employees:
Today we mark the fifth anniversary of the horrendous September 11 terrorist attacks. The passage of time has helped heal some of the wounds our nation suffered, but it has done little to erase from our minds the horrific images of that day.
Please take a moment today to remember the victims of the attacks,
and the men and women who took such extraordinary steps to help save lives
amid the destruction and chaos of that day.
The attacks taught us much about ourselves and our nation. We took strength in the outpouring of humanity and compassion in the aftermath of tragedy. We discovered the deep well of common-purpose that binds us together in community and nation. We drew closer to family, friends and neighbors.
We also learned the value of being prepared to help ourselves
and others in the event of a disaster. It is a responsibility as public servants
we must all take to heart.
Five years later, it is clear the attacks marked a dramatic turning point in our history. We cannot change the events of that day. But we can shape the legacy of September 11 by drawing on the sacrifice, generosity, kindness and resolve it inspired to make our community a better place.
Sincerely,
GREG NICKELS
Mayor
