"Building Equitable Workplaces: We All Belong!"
Local Conference Teaches Anti-Discriminatory Employment Practices
On Monday, October 12, from 8:00 to 4:00, the Seattle Human Rights Commission,
the Seattle Office for Civil Rights and the Seattle Executive Services Department will
sponsor "Building Equitable Workplaces: We All Belong!", an all day conference
on non-discriminatory employment practices, held at Providence Seattle Medical Center.
This hands-on conference is geared to the needs of small businesses and non-profit
organizations and will provide employers with practical skills and strategies to operate a
productive, diverse workplace. Commissioner Alexandra Laird noted, "We believe that
businesses in Seattle want a diverse workforce, and are often challenged about how to
accomplish this. This conference is an excellent opportunity to learn new ways of
diversifying your workforce."
Assunta Ng, Publisher of Northwest Asian Weekly and the Seattle Chinese
Post, will provide the morning keynote on, "The Business Benefits of Creating
Diverse and Equitable Workplaces." Morning workshops include: "How to Stay Out
of Hot Water: Interviewing Do’s and Don’ts"; and "Tips for Recruiting
and Retaining a Diverse Workforce."
The afternoon keynote on "Affirmative Action: Myths, Realities and Benefits for
Your Organization"; will feature Robbi Ferron, Executive Director of the Equal
Opportunity Center, Western Washington University. Additional workshops include,
"Beyond Compliance: Achieving the Benefits of Diversity"; and "Skills for
Managing a Diverse Workforce." The final session of the day will offer a series of
small, roundtable discussions with resource speakers on: Americans With Disability Act,
Age Discrimination; Multilingual Workforces; Women and Minority Business Enterprises; and
Sexual Minorities in the Workplace.
Cost for the conference, including a box lunch is $45, if registration is received by
October 1, 1998. Registration after October 1, 1998, is $55. The location is wheelchair
accessible. ASL interpretation is available upon request: ten days advance notice of
