Mayor Nickels Celebrates First 100
Days
"Making a difference in people’s
lives"
SEATTLE – Two days ahead of schedule, Mayor
Greg Nickels today celebrated the completion by city workers and others of his
100-day Action Agenda – with every task accomplished – and unveiled
"bonus" accomplishments.
"I'm more than pleased with the work we've
completed in such a short time," Nickels said. "City staff people have
risen to my challenges and made some fast, dramatic changes that I think set the
stage for more and bigger improvements to how the city does business."
April 10 marks the 100th day of the
Nickels administration.
In his State of the City address in January,
Mayor Nickels outlined his objective--to make a difference in people's
lives--and his top ways of going about it. He pledged to complete several tasks
in the first 100 days of his administration:
- To improve transportation and traffic;
- To appoint an Economic Opportunity Task Force
to devise ways the city can help businesses begin and thrive;
- To improve public safety by improving police
and firefighter training and opening the work of the Office of Professional
Accountability to the public; and
- To reach out to neighborhoods by broadening
the mission of the Department of Neighborhoods and improving direct services
to customers.
The mayor announced dozens of actions that
delivered on those promises, such as a new aggressive program to fill potholes,
a new Emergency Preparedness Bureau in the Police Department, an expanded
mission for the Department of Neighborhoods; a Clean Seattle Initiative to pick
up trash in parks and public places; and a host of services to the community
performed in the past 100 days.
It’s a long list, and it can be viewed in its
entirety at the mayor’s web site, http://www.cityofseattle.net/mayor/.)
"These accomplishments have strengthened my
belief that with strong leadership and clear direction, the city can accomplish
wonders," said the mayor. "We have a long way to go, but I feel good
about where we’re headed. We've built a solid foundation for the future.
"By showing common sense and by taking care
of the small stuff, the public knows that, when we seek support for a big
project, we will keep our promises and deliver results."
